After visiting her mom Helen every day at a nursing home in Provincetown and seeing how many people never received visitors, Suzanne Carter knew her next chapter in life had found her. Using her modest inheritance, Flower Angels USA was born to honor her mom’s memory and for Mara, her delightful special needs daughter, to learn the importance of kindness and service to others.
With over 2000 nursing home beds on Cape Cod, the idea of delivering random acts of love to patients who often have minimal contact with a friend or family member emerged. Flower Angels became a friend to all who are often forgotten in elder care facilities. Flower Angels USA was founded on the idea that perfectly good repurposed flowers and lonely people were a match made in heaven. Suzanne, her daughter Mara and her amazing “angel” volunteers are thrilled to uplift spirits by delivering 200 or more bouquets of joy weekly. By the end of each month residents in 28 facilities on Cape Cod have been visited. Many of our senior volunteers have found camaraderie and a renewed life purpose as Flower Angel volunteers…a win-win for all!
Flower Angels USA has benefited greatly from the kindness of others including our awesome floral partners, Trader Joes, Shaws Markets and many local brides and event planners. Our 501 (c) (3) charitable organization began in March 2014. Since that time it has expanded its mission to include other organizations; Community Connection, Cape Abilities and L.I.F.E., who have become an important part of the Flower Angels delivery team. These organizations facilitate the hiring and volunteerism of adults with disabilities-another match made in heaven.
Recipient of the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation’s ‘Myra Kraft Community MVP Award’ and the Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, Suzanne and the Flower Angels USA team are dedicated to “Delivering Random Acts of Love, Recycling Flowers, Warming Hearts”
Suzanne is a fifth-generation Cape Codder who has run successful businesses on the Cape for decades. She was happily retired and not looking for a “next chapter” but sometimes the next chapter in your life finds you!
Meet our New Executive Director & Board of Directors
Kristine Callahan, Executive Director
Kristine was appointed the first executive director of Flower Angels USA and began her role on November 1, 2018. With over twenty years of caring compassionate experience in health care, marketing, non-profit development and senior advocacy Kristine is poised to lead Flower Angels forward into new expansion, programs with ambitious goals. As a family caregiver, and board member of the Estate Planning Council of Cape Cod, Kristine brings unique insight for community collaboratives through volunteer programs and much more. Chairman Jitka Borowick, President CleanGreen Inc.
Jitka came to the U.S. in 2003 from the Czech Republic, focused on studying English. She went to Cape Cod Community College and in 2008 graduated with an Associate’s Degree. She continued on at Suffolk University and in 2011, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree.In 2008 Jitka combined her vision of starting her own business and doing something positive for the environment – she opened Cleangreen, a natural cleaning company. She worked out of her home, cleaning by herself but she had a larger vision to grow a successful company.
Jitka is a member of the American Business Women’s Association, Cape Cod Young Professionals, Greater Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce, is a past president of the BNI – Convergence Team, and is currently a board member of the Rotary Club of Hyannis and Flower Angels USA. Jitka and her employees are active in the community as part of the company’s core values, supporting organizations such as WE CAN, the CC Commercial Fisherman’s Alliance and CCYP. Jitka was awarded “40 Under 40” from Cape & Plymouth Business, recognized as 10 Inspiring Women by Cape Cod Magazine, and awarded Business Woman of the Year in 2015 from Cape & Plymouth Business. firstname.lastname@example.org
Tracy Shaughnessy, Attorney
Tracy E. Shaughnessy is an associate in the Trusts & Estates Department at Nutter, McClennen & Fish, LLP. She works out of the firm’s Hyannis office and focuses her practice on estate planning, probate, guardianship, elder law and all aspects of estate and trust administration. Tracy is active in the community, volunteering as a pro bono attorney for WE CAN, a non-profit organization offering low and moderate income women a range of free legal services. In addition, she serves on the Board of Directors for the Cape Cod Community Media Center. Tracy also serves on the UMass-Dartmouth School of Law Alumni Board. During law school, Tracy was the recipient of the Rikki J. Klieman, Esq., Advocacy Through Scholarship Award. She also received a Medal of Excellence for Outstanding Bankruptcy Studies from the American Bankruptcy Institute and was a semi-finalist in the National Moot Court Competition. email@example.com
Steven Heslinga, Financial Advisor
Steven Heslinga joined Flower Angels USA in June, 2016. Steven currently works in Hyannis as a Financial Advisor at the Heslinga & Tate Wealth Management Group. He is involved with a number of local charitable and service-based organizations, primarily the Hyannis Rotary Club and Habitat for Humanity Cape Cod. Prior to returning to his native Cape Cod in 2014, Steven worked in Charlotte, NC as an investment banker and bond trader for seven years. firstname.lastname@example.org
Kevin P. Ducie, Financial Advisor
After working in law enforcement for several years as a police officer, Kevin came to UBS Financial Services in Hyannis to join his father’s business. Together, they work with individuals and families to assist them in growing and protecting their wealth. Kevin is a financial advisor and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™. In addition to serving on the Board of Directors at Flower Angels USA he is involved with other local organizations. Kevin delivers Meals on Wheels in Sandwich and is Treasurer of the Rotary Club of Bourne/Sandwich, where he has been awarded the Paul Harris Fellow. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Western New England University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and was awarded the Academic Excellence Award in Criminal Justice. Peter Carey, Human Services
Peter Carey is the Executive Director of Homecare Choices, a nonprofit dedicated to quality care and support services for seniors on Cape Cod. Peter has been a human services program developer and agency director for 25+ years in Bermuda and Boston. His work was always in children’s services until more recently shifting focus to respond to the rapidly growing needs in senior services. He relocated to the Cape with his family in 2016 to develop Homecare Choices as a new division of the North American Family Institute. Their mission is to maximize independence and fulfillment for the people they serve. He brings experience and passion for community development, nonprofit development and advocacy work. Suzanne Carter, Founder
Suzanne Carter is the Founder and President of Flower Angels USA. A native Cape Codder, Suzanne is also a registered nurse, and a very successful business woman. She founded and operated the “Portuguese Princess Whale Watch, Inc.,” “Provincetown Excursions, Inc.,” and “Daisy’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream/Espresso Cafe, Inc.” She was also the initial owner of five “Curves For Women” franchises on Cape Cod. Her greatest achievement, however, is being a devoted and dedicated mother to her 40 year old special needs daughter, Mara! Suzanne is a recent recipient of the “New England Patriots Myra Kraft Community MVP Award,” the “Paul Harris Fellow Award,” and the “Life is Good Hero of Optimism Award.” email@example.com

Kathy Ahern, Secretary
Kathy Ahern joined Flower Angels USA in February, 2016. She is an Office Support Coordinator and serves on the Board of Directors as Secretary. Kathy has held several executive board positions while contributing to numerous charitable organizations. She was employed for many years as a Medical Administrative Assistant in both Massachusetts and Connecticut. A Massachusetts native, Kathy realized a life long dream and moved to Cape Cod with her husband, Mike, in 2014. email@example.com
